Why Is Water Pooling in My Yard? Common Causes and Fixes
Standing water in your yard can damage your foundation and landscaping. Learn the common causes and drainage solutions that work.
Standing water after rain is more than an annoyance. Over time it can damage your foundation, kill your grass, and attract mosquitoes. Here’s why it usually happens:
Poor grading. If your yard slopes toward your house or has low spots, water has nowhere to go.
Compacted soil. Heavily packed ground, common after construction, doesn’t absorb water well.
Clogged or missing drainage. Old pipes and ditches fill with debris, and some homes never had drainage installed.
Runoff from neighbors or hillsides. Water from higher ground can end up on your property.
Fixes often include regrading the yard, installing a French drain, adding a swale (a shallow channel that guides water away), or running piping to a better outlet. The right solution depends on where the water is coming from and where it can safely go.
